In concluding the Aspiration for Excellent Conduct, HH Karmapa raced through the final stanzas to get to the finish line, yet at the same time seemed completely relaxed and comfortable. I managed to make notes of the points that impressed me.
The heartfelt wish to dispel the pain of another being for just one second has infinite merits, so if you wish to dispel all sufferings there’s no need to talk about the benefits that would bring.
If we give a single drop of water or grain of rice with pure motivation we could get the lives of Brahma and Indra. Our merit does not depend on material things; it depends on our motivation.
Pure motivation is what is important. We’ve come to this sacred site and everyone is doing what they can to gain merit. It’s a mandala of love and affection. It’s the place where all Buddhists come together.
The quintessence of the aspiration prayer is being harmonious with all sentient beings.
One lay practitioner liked gambling, eating meat and drinking because he thought it would make him harmonious with all sentient beings However, following the bad habits of others doesn’t require much intelligence. There’s a difference between hanging out and being harmonious. Being harmonious means making good connections so that when others are angry we don’t get angry ourselves. In terms of their nature we need to get along with others and stay in harmony with Buddha’s teachings.
Sentient beings are the source of all buddhas and bodhisattvas. For that reason we need to respect others. Bodhisattvas put others first; they don’t see themselves as higher and others as lower.
The people we really need to praise are sentient beings. ‘I train in many different languages to make some connection with others,’ Karmapa said.
It takes huge courage to go into difficult places and bring all beings to Buddhahood.
The power of love is all pervasive, vaster than space. Our love is something like nine floors underground and we are looking for it with a torch. It has to be high and vast.
