After his visit to the Mahabodhi Temple His Holiness came to the Bhutanese Monastery to inform himself personally about the progress of the work of the torma team. While still nearly three weeks before the Monlam a lot is already accomplished and His Holiness appeared to be content with the artwork. As a great artist himself, His Holiness always shows keen interest in the work of this group and gave the artists detailed advice. The butter sculptures which are modeled here are truly astonishing and we will cover them further on this blog.

This morning His Holiness Gyalwang Karmapa visited the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, the very spot where Buddha Shakyamuni attained supreme enlightenment. His Holiness first entered the main shrine room and made prostrations to the great golden Buddha. After traditional offerings and prayers His Holiness accepted the invitation by Khenpo Tsoki Dorje, the abbot of Ngawang Thubten Choling Monastery in Bodhgaya, and joined the annual Monlam conducted by the Bhutanese monastery. He was greeted by a ceremonial procession of monks His Holiness and sat under the bodhi tree leading the prayers for an hour. As word of His Holiness’s visit to the temple spread quickly in Bodhgaya, more and more devotes joined the assembly. Traditional Bhutanese rice and tea was offered to the gathering and Khenpo’la expressed his gratitude to His Holiness. Thereafter His Holiness left the temple grounds followed by many smiling faces.

He was greeted by the monks from the monastery and many devotees from around the world. Everybody lined up in front of the monastery to welcome His Holiness holding traditional katas and burning incense. We were all very excited when His Holiness arrived escorted by attendants and security. His Holiness greeted everybody with a beaming smile, preceded into the temple, immediately prostrated to the Buddha and made offerings.
